    About the series

This series is designed for those cachers that want to try something different in caching, an experience involving a little more effort and time than caching generally entials but that delivers an idealic, relaxed, enjoyable experience on and around the Murray River (not to mention the host of other caches to find in the area).

Whether you like (or are wanting to experience) boating, kayaking, canoeing or houseboating - these caches may give you a reason, or a prod maybe?, to do so!! Some of the caches can be found by those willing (and good enough at) swimming while at least two caches in the series can be found by driving and walking a short distance to the cache (MI - Snake & MI - Katarapko).

The series has commenced with 8 caches placed on islands around the Riverland region of South Australia. Other cachers are welcome to plant caches on Murray Islands in their region and add them to this series, the only requirement is that the island has a name (or at least a locally known name).

    Caches in the series

(clicking on the link opens the cache page on geocaching.com in a new window)

    Murray Isles - Snake

    Murray Isles - Kapunda

    Murray Isles - Moorook

    Murray Isles - Thurk

    Murray Isles - Media

    Murray Isles - Rilli

    GC1FNAQ - Walk, Boat, Swim

    GC1MNJW - Boat, Swim, Wade

    GC1MNJX - Boat, Swim, Wade

In addition to the above series caches, 3 caches have been planted close (within paddling distance) to three caches in the series to make the effort of getting your watercraft out on the water for the above series caches worthwhile.
Even though, I think, the Islands themselves make it worthwhile.... two caches for your efforts at a location a bit out of the way seems fair.

    Murray Isles - Moorook has
    Heinicke Ruins GC1MNK1

    Murray Isles - Thurk has 12.5kms GC1MNK3

Murray Isles - Rilli has An even 500 GC1MNK4

*** In the back of the log book in each cache in the series (not the additional caches) is a number, write it down and the Murray Isles cache it came from.... it may (or may not) be important for future caches in the series!!***

Swim - only swim if you're a strong swimmer, its not really advised but some cachers are great swimmers and may choose this option
Walk - means you can drive close (a few hundred metres or less) to the cache and walk to get it
Wade - at time of low river you may be able to wade to the Island (through water up to about knee to waist deep - if you pick the right line!)

    Reward for the Adventurous cachers......

As reward for those adventurous cachers who take on the series..... find at least 6 caches in the series (I'm not mean enough to insist you find them all! there may be 12 or more when complete!) planted by gypsycacher, email your postal address and a pathtag like the one below will be forwarded your way. The tag may vary from what is shown below, but this is the design it will be based on (it hasn't been produced yet). Pathtag offer is limited until the run of 50 tags are all gone.

I'd love to do the series but don't have a watercraft!

Does this sound like you? It was me about 6 months ago until I purchased an Inflatible Kayak for a little over $125 (which included the paddle.... I've seen them cheaper on the net.... you know where!) and I've been loving it ever since. In honesty I wish I'd brought it sooner. I've found numerous local caches (which is why I brought it in the first place) and planted quite a few more on the Murray. It packs away in a box 56cmX36cm and 16cm deep! Inflated it looks something like this.....

This particular craft has 5 air compartments, so if you get a hole in one it isn't going to sink. The maximum recommended weight is 400pounds which is probably about 170kg?

I'm not going to brand drop as there are a few about, but for caching, experiencing something different in caching they are great value and a lot of fun! What have you got to lose for the small price and the great places that it can take you! Not to mention the caches you can chase!
